One of the most popular questions we get asked on a day to day basis in our shop is, ‘will I have that moment’? and why haven’t I had ‘that moment’?
I’m sure every bride wants and thinks she is going to have the moment where she stands in a dress, and somehow just knows she has found the dress she is going to wear on the best day of her life! Sadly ladies a lot of the time, it just doesn’t happen!
You might think working in a bridal shop and having a wedding to plan would be the perfect combination. It is wonderful as you get to meet lots of other brides to be on a daily basis, ask questions about the details of their big day, share hints, tips and ideas – all great! However when it comes to choosing your dress, it is oh so much harder!
My engagement has been quite long, so (of course) I started to try dresses on about a year and a half before the wedding. As soon as a new dress came in the shop, I would be in my underwear with the latest beautiful creation in my mitts, putting it on as fast as I could. It was fun and all the girls in the shop used to laugh at how I could put my self into the most complicated dresses without any help!
As time went on, I didn’t have any actual ideas of what I wanted. I started trying dresses properly for my doting family, who, of course, loved everything, and started to feel quite stressed at the fact that I had tried every dress in the shop (three times) and had not had ‘that’ moment where I felt I had found my dress.
I decided maybe my dress was not in High Society, so ventured to another bridal boutique full of beautiful lace, flowing chiffon and no! nothing! nada!
In the end it came down to a few things I knew I liked on a few different dresses. Awen made me sit down and write a list of all my must haves for my dress. I had 5 things that I specifically wanted. There was a dress that I particularly liked, but lots about it that I didn’t. Awen worked through it with me and in the end, we got there! We decided on my dress, but I can honestly say that I never had the dream moment. I had to work through my priorities and come to an end conclusion.
I think it is so hard for brides to choose their dress nowadays; there are so many beautiful dresses out there with so many different styles, fabrics, shapes that it makes our decision so much harder. There is a lot of pressure on the bride to pick a fabulous dress. It is, after all, what most people at weddings wait to see.
So ladies, don’t get disheartened if you can’t find ‘the one’. Just work out what you want, and go from there. Believe me, you will end up with a dress you love!
